Dear Minnesotan summer,
I’ve loved you. The beautiful colors and the fresh produce and the thick thunderstorms rolling in at night. You’ve given me time to rest and think.
We’ve had our time at the lake — a yearly thing — that seems so long ago now. Such a glorious week of eating and playing cards and relaxing and fishing and doing nothing at all.
Summer, you’re a celebration of friends and family. Laughter and holding hands. Icecream at nine. Dangling feet in the water off the dock.
But, dear summer, I’m starting to get ready for fall. I know, I know, how could that be? How could I want to give up the afternoons spent swinging and looking at the leaves swaying in the muggy breeze?
You see, summer what I love most about you is the lack of structure. The freedom. The days that blur together. The late soccer evenings and even {gasp} those pesky moquitoes to complain about.
But, now, I’m craving just a little bit more order in my house.
I’m maybe a-little-bit-sort-of-ready for crisp breezes and eager kids wanting to learn.
I want to pull out those books and talk about the water cycle and how amazing it is that God created the world in just six days — and then He rested. I’m ready to drill math facts.
And harvest apples. And go to the orchard. And hear the crunch of leaves underfoot.
Summer, I love you. You’re a needed and craved after season in my life. I’ll miss all the lovely colors of produce that you provide. Oh and the corn. I’ll miss that fresh corn. And of course, I’ll miss those lazy hazy days of summer — no wonder there’s a song about you.
Don’t worry. Come April and May I’ll know I’ll be counting the days until you come again.
Wait. I know I’ll be counting those days in January. And summer, just so you know, your letter is much nicer than the letter I write to winter — that letter is basically thanking it for finally leaving. I mean, because seriously — look at the picture of winter. I am so not ready for that.
Ah, summer. Such a blessing. Seeing that picture of winter makes me want you to stay around some more. Lots more — I’m sure I’ll love winter when it comes. But, not yet. No. Not at all.
So summer, I’m going to live in joy these last couple weeks. Embracing the fabulous gifts you bring. The freedom and laughter and even the fun and excitement in planning for the fall. Summer you are joy.
And, between you and me, you just might be the best.
~me
{what would you write about summer?}

Love your letter and I confess that I have enjoyed this summer more than I typically do. The older I get, the less I like heat. And I REALLY don’t like extreme heat and humidity, and those are two things that were plentiful this year. I do, however, love fall! Colorful leaves painting the hills (I do live in WV, after all!) and woodsmoke on the breeze, comfy sweatshirts and hayrides. Ahhhhhh….
Bring it on, Autumn! 😉
Love your letter and I’m sure summer will be thrilled to receive it. I am so ready for autumn, the cool crisp breeze and the smell of pumpkin pie.
That picture of the snow made me cringe! Oh summer how I do love you…just not the humidity. I am anxious for Fall for all of the reasons that you mentioned. I’m ready to get back into a routine. And I just checked out the apple picking schedule. Oh Fall…how I think I might just love you most. Don’t tell Summer.
I have loved every minute of this summer, but i’m ready for a new season. Not just the weather, a new season in my life, my families life. I can’t wait for my little brother to be home schooled [he went to private last year.] and for us all to be together. It’s going to be an amazing fall, I can already tell.
I love it, what a beautiful letter. Not even sure if I could write a letter to summer, but maybe I’ll try. 🙂

You write so beautifully and share such beautiful photography as well. I love reading your posts!

I would write the same letter. I enjoy the pictures that you share, that so perfectly capture the words you write.
it’s funny because i always think the season we’re in is my favorite, but just when i start to get tired of it, another one rolls around. it’s like God knew we needed some seasons to keep us going. : ) i’m really going to miss summer though. the pool days have been sweet.
your summer pictures are presh. and there’s that shoe/leaf pic… i think i remember it?! or if not that one, another one similar, because i fell in love with it.
you’ve had a sweet summer. looking forward to hearing all about your fall.
and to think that summer 2011 will go down in history as the one where i met rachel martin. awesome.
That last picture- I love his joy in the sprinkler.
Summer is my favorite season to look forward to. Hot sticky Louisiana humidity filled summer days. I’m going to miss them soon.
Not looking forward to it getting darker earlier. I love being able to go walking in the evening. Having to go a little earlier every day.
Praying right now!

What beautiful photos. Summer is my favorite.
Reporting a spouse as having died is only worth $255 in a one time payment. The wisdom of relevance and lifespan is already well established; the dampening filter is simply one more reason why people should start to heed it. I built the right side frame and incorprated a box frame for the lower right adobe cave. 1 year? July sales of TCL’s LCD TV, compared with the same period last year surged 85.3%. Lastly, you should make note on a calendar to clean or replace the dehumidifier filter every month.
