My list of things to do right now is large.
Make that huge.
Laundry. Homeschool planning. Laundry catch-up. Homeschool planning catch up. Cleaning. Deep cleaning. Cleaning catch-up. Ballet runs. Soccer runs (which are done now — and boy oh boy was it freezing outside). Grocery shopping. Cooking. Cleaning out the fridge. Vacuuming (with my Oreck, of course). Review writing. Emails. Phone calls. Being a mom.

My list is even longer than a normal Saturday since we’ve been sick most of the week — and we’ve been dealing with Samuel’s severe pneumonia. {Which, by the way, seems to be clearing up. He’s got two days left of the Zithromax and I no longer have to do breathing treatments. please note — he’s fine now — this post was written in September.} The list? And stuff to do? Easily overwhelming.
That’s when I go back to my — just do one thing — reminder.
One thing.
One thing.
One thing.
What is one thing I can do now?
And when I identify it I have to actually not allow myself to think about or look at everything else or else I’ll get overwhelmed.
One thing.
One thing.
One thing.
Maybe it’s shining the sink. Making Samuel a PBJ. Folding half a basket of laundry. Writing this post. Sitting at soccer. Tidying the living room. It’s one thing. And I can do that one thing well.
If I graded myself off of the list of to-do’s I would probably be failing. If I look at just the one thing that I am doing, and at the attitude and heart at which I am doing it than I am doing just fine.
One thing.
It will get done. One thing at a time.

Life can be overwhelming at times. It’s hard to get to all of the things. Yet I know the Lord is calling me to be wise with my time, to prioritize those things that are most important. How do you pick? Each day I pray and ask for wisdom. Some days I get more checked off than others. I try not to look at everything I have to do. I love that you brought it back to the simplicity of focusing on just one thing at a time.
Love this post. It’s so encouraging to me because my list is similar to yours. We got so behind in the past week because of my appointments and such. So I woke this morning thinking of ALL the schoolwork we have to do to get caught up and got overwhelmed. One thing…so perfect….because one thing at a time, it WILL get done.

I’m sure your life can be overwhelming. My head swims just thnking about it but you handle it so well and I love the way your mind works to calm your soul.
I love making a list and crossing things off one thing at a time.
one thing at a time… wise words for list making and all of life. : ) hoping your one thing at a time saturday went well. soooo happy to hear your littlest man is way on the mend!
I was going to clean the front room today…something distracted me and the energy I had to do it got up and left so…such is life.
Life in this world can look so bleak at times. But the victory is ours through Christ! Put your trust in Him! Praying!
1 Corinthians 15:54-57 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Thank you for reminding us that its one thing at a time, because I know that my list can look overwhelming at times.
Very encouraging. Thank you. :o)

I hear ya. My mantra on those kinds of days is simply: “Do the next thing, Kate. All you gotta do is the very next thing.”
Thanks for your encouragement – I think our ToDo lists are probably equally daunting. 🙂
I just laugh when people say to me, “How do you do it all? I can’t believe all you do!” because every night when I lie in bed I think of all I DIDN’T accomplish. So I really appreciate your perspective on this.
We must be faithful to do what God has called us to do. He gives us the strength to deal with these big, busy families of ours.
