the search for the mighty mississippi

by Rachel Marie Martin

Yesterday we trekked northwest to Itasca State Park – which is where the headwaters of the Mighty Mississippi are located. Even the great Mississippi starts as a teeny tiny stream – one that we wandered down and across. In fact, my kids love to tell others that they’ve – walked across the Mississippi – how many people can say that? The pictures that I’m sharing are from my phone – little snippets from our adventure exploring Itasca State Park.

We arrived the day after fierce storms ripped through Northern Minnesota – storms that were packed with 70-80 mph wind gusts. Winds that simply ripped trees up out of the ground. Thankfully, where we’re staying, even though some trees fell, nothing that fell caused any permanent damage. When we drove into Itasca State Park {which my boys think looks like the moon of Endor in the Star Wars Series} we could see evidence of those winds as we saw hundred old pines ripped and twisted and now resting on the forest floor.

The pics below are a couple of pictures from around the resort after that storm. One was the tree that snapped next to the shore and the middle on is of a dock that flipped over when the straight line winds came rolling in. And for those of you wondering about my fishing ability – last night Samuel and I {with the help of my Aunt Debbie} pulled in a Northern and a Rock Bass. Samuel was not too excited about those slimy fish. I however, was quite proud.

So, now today, on the Fourth of July, we’re off to celebrate some more. Swimming, games, and off to see fireworks – and of course spend a gazzilion at Dairy Queen on Blizzards for all. Until then – enjoy these last pics of our day exploring the Mississippi’s source. That top one on the left? That’s the Mighty Mississippi – starting as a wee little stream. 🙂

On one of our family trips to Itasca State Park, my dad and I were walking on the rock that stretch across the river…and I slipped and fell in. It wouldn’t have been that bad, except it was November, and cold, and for a 8 year old it was a loooong walk to the car! Looks like you all are having a great time 🙂

Have always wanted to go to the start of the Mississippi…at least I’ve seen pictures of it now!
Always look to the Lord whatever the need. Praying!
Psalms 121:1-4 I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.

“we’ll the mississippi’s mighty & it starts in minnesota at a place that you could walk across with five steps down…” reminded of that indigo girls song after reading your post. I am originally from MN (in Wisco right now but planning a move back within the next year or so). I remember taking those same steps as you on a field trip in elementary school. so cool!

by the way, I’m a new reader & wanted to say, I am loving your uplifting, encouraging blog. thank you!
