that bring the greatest joy.
Sometimes it’s the little things that slow you down and cause that moment of pause. It’s those moments where you don’t really care what those around you think — you just be — you just live — you just feel gratitude.
Mine was this morning.
This rainy, unseasonably cold, May morning.
The older girls had a dear friend sleep over and I was going to make them muffins and, of course, I was out of muffin wrappers. Knowing Samuel would want a muffin {which needed to be gluten free} as well I packed him up and headed to the grocery store.
Samuel in his sweet red coat and sweatpants and no socks.
As we walked in — I was doing the “I’m on a hurried mission walk” — Samuel saw the carts with the little cars attached to the front. You know the carts. The ones that I try to avoid — germs, you know. The carts that are noisy and loud and take skill to turn. Yet, he saw it and his little eyes lit up with excitement.
I hesitated.
And relented.
And surprisingly, I quickly got over my fear of germs. Instead I was blessed with this sweet moment of joy watching my healthier Samuel drive two steering wheels passed the freshly loaded rack of $2.50 cantaloupe, and the grinning ladies behind the service counter, all the way back to the frozen section of the natural foods area to pick up gluten free muffins. As we walked by the brown organic eggs and pricey bottles of Noni I stopped, pulled out my phone {hence the picture quality} and tried to capture just a bit of that moment.
It was beautiful.
This moment of joy captured in Samuel trickled down to me. It’s funny how the things we fear {for me the cart full of germs} can turn into sources of great joy. It’s just letting go of that fear. Of not caring about the extra work, about others’ opinions, about the extra time. Somehow those twenty minutes in our grocery store became the highlight of my day — and caused me to reflect on how many opportunities I miss.
After all, I had hand sanitizer in the car. 🙂

What a sweet moment this is! I never got over the fear of ‘germs’ so my kids never rode in a cart like this, sad for now they are too big, I guess now I will just have to wait for grandchildren which will be a long time in coming.
Enjoy you children they are so sweet. It is nice to see you taking these opportunities to stop and watch and be filled with joy.
Glad to see Samuel is doing better.

Ahhhhh… so sweet. Thank you for sharing this sweet experience.
God bless!
Beautifully written! Thanks so much for sharing this reminder to slow down. We all need this from time to time.
What a great way to begin your Saturday morning! Sweet Samuel!
What a precious moment. I’m so glad you were able to capture it and enjoy it!
such a beautiful reminder! i’m so glad you and he got some special time together. he looks so cute in that cart. and i’m learning that as i worry less about the germs, life is more enjoyable and well lived. : )
You could carry some sanitizer wipes in your purse. Most stores used to have them by the carts but having a hard time finding them anymore…maybe a way to cut costs?
Praying in Seattle!
Philippians 4:6-7 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

So thankful for these simple moments!
Oh isn’t life so much more joyous when we let go! Love your heart Rachel!
The little things can mean the most!
I have had ladies come up to me in the store and emphatically suggest that I take my children’s picture at times like these. You did! Now you will be that mom telling other moms to capture the moment!
My little one’s blood work came back and he is low on iron and vitamin D, but nothing else. Still, thanks in part to you, I am glad was brave enough to be his advocate. Checking things out to make sure is a huge relief!
In the mean time we are still learning to live with my 4yo’s egg allergy. Off to make egg-free muffins!
So glad you soaked up this special moment and captured it to share with us;0. Kids sure love those carts huh. lol
