day one

by Rachel Marie Martin
it’s here
the beginning
of a new year
what will it bring?
I know life.
How can I expect it to not have
the ups and downs?
Ups and downs
don’t define
joy.
Or contentment.
“…for I have learned to be
content
in whatever
the circumstances.”
Philippians 4:11b
How do you do this?
What is this type of contentment?
My word for this year?
Content.
My verse for this year?
Philippians 4:11
And this terrifies me.
I don’t want the downs of the roller coaster.
I am not going to live in fear.
I am going to live thankful for each day.
Joyful.
Grateful for each moment.
Knowing that
there can be contentment
found in all things.
Dishes.
Teaching.
Driving.
Paying Bills.
Laughing.
Cleaning.
Reading.
Learning.
Doctor’s visits.
Being a mom.
Planning.
Resting.
So this year
no matter what
I’m praying for contentment.
How about you?

contentment, this is a good word, a good goal. Mine is kind of the same thing…’happy heart’ no matter what I am doing. Kind of like being ‘content’.
Happy New Year and may you find contentment in ALL THINGS of 2011!

Love, marlece

That really is the perfect word. Thank you for the reminder. It is so true that contentment has to be in spite of our circumstances a lot of times, not tied to them.
Blessings to you and your family in the coming year!

I am with you! 🙂

Through Bible study you find that no one – not even Jesus – promised an easy life! Life is life! We can choose to be miserable or find the small joys and rely on Him to get us through the other stuff.

You won’t believe it, but the first thing the Lord spoke to me this morning was my need for contentment.
Your words have reinforced that. Thank you.

see? 🙂

I really like how you said ups and downs don’t define joy. That is such a hard thing to remember, especially in the down times, but it is so true.

Wonderful! I was just talking to a friend today who told me she is just trying to enjoy the little moments in life… just trying to live in the moment and really enjoy it all. And she was inspired to do this by reading one of my blog posts about living in the NOW (http://corinesmiles.blogspot.com/2010/10/now.html). That really pleased me! Now… to learn to do more of it myself! Ha ha! LOL

Thank you for YOUR inspiration. 😉

Rachel, What a beautiful family you have. Thank you for visiting our blog.

I enjoyed your post on what this year will bring…..as I looked back on the beginning of last year I didn’t know I’d be expecting or that my husband would be far away in a war. God is good in ALL things and your outlook is refreshing 🙂

Going to take it one day at a time!
Know that I’m praying so at this end!
Revelation 7:16-17 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.
