the amazing outstanding unbelievable science experiment.

by Rachel Marie Martin
Do not repeat this at home.

Unless you want to totally amaze those kids of yours….

Earlier this week we performed one of my favorite science experiments to do with kids. Really. It’s easy to do, doesn’t make a huge mess, and provides that “scientific wonder” in kids.

It’s the

Unbelievable Make the Egg Float in Water Experiment.

Here’s how to do it – and your kids will think it’s awesome.

Grab two glasses and fill 3/4 way with water.

In one glass add ten teaspoons of salt.

Stir till it’s dissolved and clear.

Label each glass {teach them labeling when they are young — plus it’s super cute}

Carefully drop an egg into each glass.

And presto — the egg in the salt water floats.

My younger kids gasp every single time we’ve done this experiment.

Then always I always let them drop an egg somewhere else.
It’s the perfect ending for the perfect k-2nd science experiment…

…and it starts the discussion on gravity.

Go on.

Do Science.

You can do it.

This experiment is found in the Usborne Book of Science of Air and Water.

Or maybe it’s not science and you’re just an awesome magician!

I remember doing this experiment when my kids were small. The joy on their faces and the gasp of air always thrilled me.

My daughter did her first year of university at home, Bachelor of Science majoring in Biology and they sent her kits to do experiments. It was neat because she would pull out her mini lab and the kitchen turned into an experiment station. She even did tests and exams at home via skype.

Keep instilling this into your kids just be careful for the unexpected baking soda bomb. :s My son set one off in the kitchen and well, let’s just say we were cleaning up exploded baking soda from the ceiling. 🙂

Blessings,
<><

Look how excited they are! Great activity for a wide age range too- magical and fun for the littlest ones, and a true science lesson for the older kids. Homeschooling must be such hard work, but so much fun.

I just found your sons story, his battle with celiac disease, through your daughter’s blog. I left a coment because it really touched me, please read it. And thanks for the cool science experiment idea!

I love simple science projects!!!! Cute idea.

My hubby does almost all of the experiment stuff at our house – and they nearly all involve large explosions or freaky chemical reactions. Needless to say, experiments w/ Dad will probably be the most remembered part of their years of homeschooling.

However, since he’s crazy busy with remodeling our “new” house before baby arrives, I’m going to use your egg idea!!

Praying right now!
Psalms 40:16-17 Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: let such as love thy salvation say continually, The LORD be magnified. But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God.
