Here’s the deal — I love writing, but I don’t really enjoy teaching writing. Well, that’s not exactly true, but I struggle with teaching writing since it’s a subjective subject. It’s not Algebra where I can pull out the teacher’s key, look at the solution, hope to remember, and then proceed to teach the steps. Writing doesn’t have a set key.
As a homeschooling parent I’ve probably curriculum flopped, flipped, switched, tried, and tried again many writing programs. So, when I was given the opportunity to try a pilot version Write with World by God’s World Publications {part of God’s World News} I jumped at the opportunity.
The text I received is for middle school students so I asked Chloe, my 14 year old, if she’d mind trying another writing program. She too jumped. Immediately I noticed a difference in the focus with her writing — Write with World takes writing and makes it real. Relatable. And all with an emphasis on finding your voice and using your voice, your writing, as a skill that can honor God.
As a writer one of the things that I’ve had to muddle through are those times of finding and clarifying voice so I appreciate the emphasis on voice in this curriculum. It takes writing and makes it personable to each individual along with teaching practical, important, critical and necessary writing skills.
The book is broken down into 4 different units and within each unit are 16 various capsules/lessons. Unit 1 started with the student, my Chloe, looking at written advertising and asks her to analyze what the underlining message that the advertiser is trying to convey. I love this. I love how it’s forcing the student to become aware of the power of the written/visual word and to begin to not take everything at face value. As the lessons progress there is a great mix of nitty-gritty {and important} writing details along with plenty of hands on practice with notes and advice by God’s World News writers {so cool!}. There is an additional teacher’s guide that further explains each of the unit/lesson objectives.
Six weeks is simply not long enough to give you a review of the entire curriculum – I feel as if we’ve only scratched the surface of this impressive program. However, I can tell you that we will continue with Write with World for the rest of the year and will probably pick up where we left off in the fall. Coming from me, the writing curriculum drop-out, this is a huge statement. In fact, I think I’ve enjoyed working through this with Chloe just as much as she’s enjoyed doing each lesson. 🙂
If you’re looking for a writing program for that middle schooler of yours I do recommend checking Write with World out.
