Years ago, when I was in highschool, I studied Latin. And it was okay — a text book and a bunch of teenagers trying to pronounce words and take tests. I did okay, studied hard, and used it as my language credit. Fast forward to college — I had to take a language, again. Did I choose Latin? Nope. I actually spent almost 3 years studying Italian {I can order very well in any Italian restaurant….grazie…} with an advantage. That advantage? Yep, you guessed it — Latin.
I knew I wanted my kids to study Latin. But, again, thinking back, Latin can be, well, kind of boring. Until I discovered Visual Latin as an option. Visual Latin is taught by Dwane Thomas — a homeschool dad who’s taught Latin for 15 years and is produced by Thomas Purifoy Jr. — another homeschool dad and owner of the company Compass Cinema. Each lesson in Visual Latin has 3 videos and then 3 worksheets. Easy and fun.
Gracie, my ten year old, has loved learning Latin. She’ll wander around the house telling me Latin words and then will make simple sentences using Latin linking verbs connected with English words. In fact, in the morning, she’s asking to “just do one more Latin lesson.” Success, if you ask me.

Here’s a sample video for you to enjoy. I appreciate the humor that Dwane integrates throughout the lessons and the ease {and joy} in which he teaches Latin. He makes it fun. {Please note, I had to embed the video via youtube so the other recommended videos aren’t recommended by me. ;)}
I highly recommend Visual Latin. Not only will you begin to to learn a new language, but your family will also gain a better understanding of the English language. And, perhaps, someday will have an advantage in learning another language like I did. 🙂

We love it, too.
Amo Latin! Est bonum.
I do Latin from the book “Henle 1 Latin” and I actually thoroughly enjoy doing it. I find Latin a rather interesting subeject and it is probably my favorite subject in school!
That’s awesome! I took a semester of Latin in college last year and enjoyed it. It was the accelerated course, though, with a year’s worth of Latin in a semester. I thought I’d be able to handle it since I’ve had years of Spanish {it was my first language and I took four years in high school}, but Spanish does not have noun declensions, and we only spent about a week focusing on nouns. I would love to take Latin again sometime, but at a much slower pace than before!
this sounds pretty superb! yet another benefit to home schooling. you’re going to have me pretty convinced by the time my kids are ready for school! : )
in college, we could take a french or spanish lit course in place of a language. i took french lit and can’t remember anything about it, nor can i speak any language. ha!
you HAVE to visit Italy one day, to put all your italian into practice. i know that’s a dream of yours. maybe there’s something you can review over there?!
happy Lord’s day.
I love reading about how excited your kids are to learn!
Know that I’m praying so at this end!
Revelation 7:16-17 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

We enjoyed Visual Latin, and the boys are thrilled with how it’s helping them figure out words in other languages, too!
