For a good deal of March, in addition to my regular posting, I’ll be sharing with you our opinions on some of the curriculum that our family has been blessed to review. And, really, it’s a blessing. I am grateful for the companies that have shared their hard work with our family. A review button will be coming so that all reviews will be easy to access.

The last month or so my family has been able to review this online program called Reading Eggs. Honestly, at first, I was a bit on the fence about the program. And, honestly again, that was only because I hadn’t tried it. Yet. Now? I love it.
Reading Eggs is an online phonics and reading program which can help children learn to read or can brush up those reading skills and comprehension. I decided to register Caleb for the Reading Eggs program.Yep, that’s him. Isn’t he cute?
Caleb, who is six, can read fairly well right now. He knows sight words and has little problems decoding simple CVC words. Normally, when faced with a program like this I wouldn’t know where to place him in it and that would lead to me being frustrated with the program in general as we’d spend a great deal of time assessing levels. The cool thing about Reading Eggs is that they have an online assessment {which Caleb told me was fun} that places your child exactly where their skills are located.
Caleb started at a more advanced level than right at the beginning. Was some of that level too easy? Yes, but there were other things he didn’t know — new sight words, rules of reading, and so on. The cool thing for me was that Elijah, who is four, loved the program just as much as Caleb and would sit with him while they played it. Elijah is just now learning to read. He wants to have his own place on the Reading Eggs map. Seriously, who can blame him? Cool fact — for siblings Reading Eggs offers a 50% discount.
Honestly, the best part for me, as a homeschooling mom to seven, is that I can let Caleb play the Reading Eggs game for 30 minutes while I work with one of their siblings. He’s polished off a great deal of his reading skills and looks forward to the days where he gets to play it. There are 3 levels, with 40 lessons each — so I know that there will always be more for him to learn and practice. Recommended ages? Between 4-8.
Overall? I was impressed. I would not use this as our entire phonics/reading program {Sorry Caleb}, however, I will continue to use it as a supplement to our existing programs. I just asked Caleb what he thought of Reading Eggs — here are his words, I like Reading Eggs. It’s fun. And I like playing it. And I’m thinking about playing it right now. How’s that for an endorsement? 🙂
