This year, Caleb is in technically kindergarten age. I say technically because he’s got one of those birthdays that falls in the gray area of where do you place him — he turned six on September 15 — and he’s super bright. For public school he would have just qualified to start kindergarten even though at home he’s ready to do kindergarten/first grade work.
Enter Memoria Press.
This program is a classical educational program that is perfect for Caleb. Caleb is an incredibly auditory learner who enjoys copywork {yes, he really does} and loves recitation and narration. Memoria Press let us review their Kindergarten program this year.
Now, Caleb and I started about half-way through their program as Caleb already knew how to read simple words and phrases. However, I did not start half way with their recitation, arts, and memory work guide. We just worked to do two weeks in one until we caught up. This worked great, and now in mid-March, we’re wrapping up the kindergarten program. I’m grateful to have started there as it firmly cemented some important concepts via recitation.
Here’s why I love the recitation aspect of Memoria Press. It works through various facts — Math {counting, skip counting and more}, continents, days of the week, months, and more and simply has the child recite back to you the answer to simple questions. It helps me know {and remember} that Caleb knows these basic details that sometimes can get overlooked in a busy day. Plus, it gives me, the distracted mom at times, a concrete list to follow each and every day.
The planner is extremely easy to use and extremely {yes, I’m using that word twice} helpful for me to have. I’ll simply pull it out and start up where we left off. I’m not a slave to it — I’ll skip where we need to or often do two days at once — but it works as an easy guide for me a very busy homeschooling mom. Plus, the planner/guide gives excellent suggestions for History, Science, Arts and Music. We’ve spent some amazing time discussing various works of music and comparing and contrasting them. I’m so impressed how Memoria Press wove this into their standard curriculum.
This is a rigorous kindergarten program and I believe will work best for children who enjoy writing and copywork. Next year, I’m looking forward through working through their first grade program with Caleb as I know it will continue to build on the very solid platform of knowledge that Caleb gained through using Memoria Press.
I’ll be sharing some more in the weeks to come — hopefully including a video of Caleb working through his recitation work as well as some more of his copywork pages. What I’ve found homeschooling multiple children is that there are no two alike and not every curriculum works for every child. This type of auditory, recitation driven, and classical based program worked exceptionally well for Caleb. Make sure to visit Memoria Press and check out their grade packages and samples and beautiful products.
disclosure: I received a partial set of kindergarten materials from Memoria Press for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own. No other compensation was given.

This is my first visit to your blog, but not my last! 😉 I am homeschooling my four boys (the youngest isn’t school age yet, but…) I love to hear about your curriculum and experiences.
I already love you just by reading your about page etc…Now I’ll be taking a look around.
Bless you and thank you for sharing!
Never understood the logic of cutoff dates. One of my kids was born on Sept. 3…CA changed their cutoff dates so he would have missed it by 2 days. Before the change the cutoff was mid December! By that date Caleb would already be in 1st grade. I don’t get it…
Continuing to lift up prayers!
Psalms 63:5-8 My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips: When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches. Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice. My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me.
I love their Copybooks 🙂
Thank you for this! If there were such a thing, would you want to participate in a Memoria Press Blog Roll (for bloggers using MP Curriculum)? It might be in the works, if there is enough interest…
