1} Apple pickin’ time. That was yesterday, on my day of rest, at my parents. My little sister, Abby, and I spent several hours driving my dad’s tractor through his orchard with a trailer full of eager kids and picking trees heavy with apples. Boxes and boxes and boxes and bags of apples. Blessings. But now, leaves me with work to do – good work. Thankful work.
2} I freeze apples. Really. I have one of those nifty apple peelers/corers that attaches to your counter. I’ll send the apples through that, and then slice them and then put either 4 or 8 cups in a bag. I’ll sprinkle a bit of lemon in there as well. Last year, before Samuel was diagnosed with Celiac Disease, I’d prep half of the bags with cinnamon, sugar, and some flour so that I could just dump them out and use them in a crisp. This year? I’ll be adapting and using some gluten free flour. Then, I’ll put them in freezer safe bags or vacuum seal type bags, label them, and pop those apples into the freezer until that day in January when we’re all hungry for apple crisp or apple pie or apples ontop of a puff pancake. Or just apples.
3} On Tuesday I see my shoulder surgeon. You can cue ominous music from any movie of your choice. I don’t know if I’ll be having surgery or not — part of me just wants to have it so that I don’t have shoulder problems months down the road. No matter what, I’ll be getting to go to my physical therapy and will get to listen in on my regular shoulder work-out friends. 🙂 {I think I’ll have to take Hannah with me sometime so she can get pics} And please know that I tried to only use the right arm while I was picking apples.
4} Putting a picture of Samuel in while he was apple picking. I know how you all enjoy those. And yes, that is a lacrosse net. Which, in our family we’ll also use during apple picking time — for both picking and chucking the bad apples into my dad’s pond. And for keeping little boys, who are less than one month away from being two, entertained. Can you believe that? Two?
5} I’ve also got several fun reviews coming up — including one for that fab book that I referenced last week — and a neat post on Thursday with some friends of mine. We’re going to be writing about scheduling and planning and how we can honor God in the details. I’ll be writing about our schedule and a bit of my daily life. I know, I know, I know, you’re probably wondering how I do my life with my seven kids and blogging and being a wife, and teaching and so on. Let me tell you. It’s coffee. And God. Well, mainly and totally God, and then He blessed me with coffee to keep me going. The rest of my secrets? Will be written about on Thursday.
6} So now, I’m back to the spare minutes. Anyone have extra? Ha ha ha — Of course, I’m kidding. Here’s what I’m going to do — I’m going to sit back, drink my coffee, list everything out, and just start moving. I’m joyful and grateful for the busy moments of life. For the kids, and the schedules, and the homeschooling, and the funny mornings at the physical therapist, and for the time to write. Busy is good. With the right heart and lots of plans for apples.
Do you have big plans this week? Or are you clinging to the last days of summer?

I hope you get good news at your appointment. I love all you apple memories. I need to store apples ready to bake this year. My guys would love it.
We have a date scheduled for apple picking and I can’t wait. What kind of apple does your dad have? We like to pick Jonathan because they are so good for crisp. My dream would be to learn to can apple pie filling. I hope you get smooth news about your shoulder tomorrow. Is Samuel feeling better? My big plan…sending my baby to preschool.

I’d love to go and pick apples. So fun!
Great ideas! You could also make applesauce, and chop some of the apples into little tiny pieces to add to oatmeal (with brown sugar or pure maple syrup and real butter!)… good stuff! 😀 Thanks for sharing!
PS Best of luck with your shoulder. Have you tried a natural anti-inflammatory…
Corine 😀
How FUN is that to have an apple orchard at your parent’s house?! Well, and all the other food he grows too…so jealous (but in a good way) ; ).
The only way we can pick apples is to drive like 2 hours to a place that has horridly hot weather and start having masto flare-ups while we walk around in the heat trying to find a good apple to pick that doesn’t cost four times as much as it does in the store….that’s California for you! 😉
I can’t wait for your post on scheduling…I so need that. I will be excitedly waiting!
Have a great week…and I will be praying for your appt and your decision on shoulder surgery.
Hugs!
Argh… Why can’t I be your little sister?! I want to be there picking apples. The pictures are some of my favorites. I’m convinced that your parents must have the neatest property.
I’ll be praying for that appointment. I really hope the pt is working like they want it to.
Awe, there’s my Samuel cutie! Can’t believe he’s so close to 2.
Stay calm, carry on and I know you’ll get all the necessities accomplished.
I’m so anxious to read your daily life post. I know you’ll inspire me greatly!!!!
Love ya!
I’d give you some of my spare minutes if I could, Rachel! Today was my oldest son’s first day of 1st grade in a “real school” (as he calls it). We homeschooled last year but it did NOT work for him…and we found an awesome private school 7 minutes away from us. So school it is…and suddenly I feel like I have all the time in the WORLD. It is kind of a strange feeling!
I know that you’ll get all your apples processed and stay on top of the busy-ness of life…you’re awfully good at it, you know!
I hope you find those spare minutes and hopefully you’ll throw me a few too. 😉 I hope you get everything on your lists done! I feel like I’m weeks behind so far.
Apple picking sounds like so much fun! And a lot of hard work. But so much fun! And all those apples in the freezer…the best part!
Sweet Samuel…they grow up way too fast!
I know a whole bunch of kids that I live with who would absolutely love that apple-chucking gadget. 🙂 Maybe you should patent that!
Hope your week goes well despite the busyness, Rachel. Gal. 6:9
I cannot begin to tell you how much i love the fall and apple picking. I’m kinda that girl who wants to wear overalls while picking…I can’t help it. We are enjoying the last week of summer with some of our own apple picking and preparing for kindergarten and cleaning up from Irene. Hope you guys enjoy the end of your summer too!
I wish I could cling to the last days of summer! I feel like we’re missing ours…
We love apple picking! I’m hoping to get a trip in somewhere local while we’re down here in Indiana, and then maybe when we’re back home, like on one of those January days, we can get together for some apple crisp- because I won’t have any apples prepped in my freezer this year {accepting sigh}
Praying your shoulder issues resolve fully and completely, very soon!
I’m looking forward to Thursday’s post!
It’s only Monday…isn’t it?! Wow!
Know that you’re in my thoughts and prayers! Adding prayers for your appt! The Lord will get you through whatever you have to face!
Psalms 139:7-10 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.
